Saakshar Bharat is initiated Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This scheme aims to literate society through a variety of teaching-learning programmes/schemes for non-literate and neo-literate of 15 years and above. Also, it aims to increase the literate population by 70 million adults, including 60 million women It is a scheme from Department of School Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Adult education for those adults, who have lost the opportunity and have crossed the age of formal education, but now feel a need for learning of any type, including literacy, basic education, skill development and equivalency. At present, there is, at least, one adult education centre in each district in every village.
The objective of this scheme are summarised as below:
- To literate special women, society through a variety of teaching-learning programmes/schemes for non-literate and neo-literate of 15 years and above.
- To increase the literate population
- Also targets to the illitrate adults.
Adults in the age group of 15 years and beyond primarily focus on, but not limited to, especially women. Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) Minorities, other disadvantaged groups and adolescents in rural areas. A district, including a new district, carved out of an erstwhile district that had adult female literacy rate of 50 percent or below
